Research Areas

Area 1: this first area focuses on the regulation of social relations in war—between combatants and non-combatants—through the lens of violence, the fate of civilians, the status of women and vulnerable populations, forced mobility, and the emergence of institutions specialized in managing wartime violence (derogatory justice, law of armed conflict, special tribunals).

Area 2: a second research area examines the role of war in establishing social representations (identities; stereotypes and social imaginaries; relationships to territory), their ideological or propaganda uses, as well as their role in building power and discriminatory relationships, and in triggering violence based on ethnic, social, religious, cultural, and gender affiliations, particularly against women, racialized and indigenous populations, and LGBTQ+ populations.

Area 3: this last area ponders the debated question of the role of armies and the military in society; of the influence of war on the forms of mobilization and citizen participation, as well as in the exercise and transformation of government practices.
